The upstairs of our house is a 3 room, 1 bath apartment with separate entrance and utilities. We have been attempting to rent it to a person or couple who have an interest in homesteading and organic farming, with mixed results. Our present economic situation doesn't allow for paying a stipend for farm work, but working in exchange for rent is still an option. At this point we'll consider arrangements that don't include farm help (cash rent) if we can find tenants who fit well with our farm lifestyle.
This is also an opportunity for someone to pursue a homesteading lifestyle in a supportive environment. We have been homesteaders/farmers for decades, and have tools, knowledge, and infrastructure that would enable a would-be homesteader to get started with little investment and the safety net of an established homestead. We have garden plots available and encourage independent projects.
The apartment is heated with electric heat, but is well insulated. It is bright and comfortable with nice views, especially when the leaves are off the giant maples that shade the house in the summer. Rent will depend upon the individual arrangement made. We'd like to rent to a non-smoking, drug-free, quiet individual or couple, and would prefer no dogs.
